Election Day. All 435 House seats and 35 Senate seats
Republicans control both chambers going into Election Day. The Decision Desk HQ forecast (Oct. 21) gives Democrats a 78% chance of flipping the House and a 56% chance in the Senate, with Ohio, Iowa, Maine and Texas rated toss-ups.
Why it matters for the GOPThe Senate runs through red and purple states. Kansas, South Carolina, Florida and Nebraska still lean or are likely Republican, and a GOP Senate keeps judicial confirmations on track no matter what happens in the House.
The pushbackA New York Times/Siena poll of 3,494 likely voters (Oct. 12 to 19) found 52% leaning toward the Democratic House candidate in their district and 41% toward the Republican.

49-49
Paxton vs. Talarico, Fox News poll of Texas likely voters
A new Fox News poll has Ken Paxton and James Talarico tied at 49% in the Texas Senate race, after Talarico led 51-49 in September. In Ohio, the same pollster has Sherrod Brown ahead of Sen. Jon Husted 52% to 47% (Oct. 15 to 19).
Why it matters for the GOPTexas voters say they want a Republican Senate, 51% to 47%. MAGA Inc. has put $46 million behind Paxton and $25 million behind Mike Rogers in Michigan, and Majority Leader John Thune says Republicans aren't giving up on any tight race.
The pushbackMore than 13 million early and mail votes were cast by Oct. 20, up from 9 million at this point in 2022, and the AP says Republicans make up a smaller share of advance voters than four years ago in most competitive Senate states. Neil Bush, son of George H.W. Bush, says he voted for Talarico.

$5,000
per adult, the "Trump Dividend" pledge
At the GOP's midterm convention in Dallas on Sept. 9, Trump promised every American adult $5,000 if Republicans keep Congress. Sen. Bernie Moreno (R-Ohio) says he will file a bill to pass it right after Nov. 3.
Why it matters for the GOPIt's a simple, kitchen-table promise in a year when voters say prices are their top worry. VP Vance has pitched paying for it with tariff revenue and keeping it from going to the wealthy.
The pushbackBudget experts put the cost above $1 trillion, and Congress would have to approve it. The Supreme Court struck down much of the tariff program that was supposed to help fund it.

Up to 12
House seats that could shift to the GOP after Callais (NYT estimate)
In Louisiana v. Callais (April 29, 6-3), the Court threw out Louisiana's second majority-Black district as a racial gerrymander and narrowed how Section 2 of the Voting Rights Act can be used. Tennessee and Florida redrew maps before the midterms, and Texas, Missouri and North Carolina had already redrawn mid-decade.
Why it matters for the GOPNew maps in Southern states could offset part of a national Democratic tailwind. The New York Times estimated up to 12 seats could move from Democratic to Republican control.
The pushbackCivil-rights groups say the ruling guts a core protection for minority voters. California answered with its own Prop 50 map, and Missouri's map is still tied up in court.

36%
Trump job approval, Fox News poll (Oct. 2026)
A Fox News poll released in mid-October put the President's approval at 36%, the lowest of either term, with 22% approving of his handling of inflation. Voters ranked government corruption narrowly ahead of inflation as their top issue.
Why it matters for the GOPMidterms are won race by race. Candidates who run on the border numbers and the tax cuts, rather than the national mood, have the clearest path.
The pushbackApproval this low has historically meant heavy losses for the President's party in a midterm.
